Hello!

I have been suffering with frequent and painful bladder infections since my age. I have been on Metronidazole for about 4 years and am finally diagnosed with a bacterial infection of the bladder. My doctor prescribed Flagyl for me for a couple of days, but I was worried that it could be a bacterial infection. However, my doctor prescribed me Flagyl, which is an antibiotic, but the side effects of the medication were quite severe. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this medication or knows the best course of treatment for this particular infection?

Hello,

I have a bit of a problem with my bladder as I’m constantly urinating more every day. I have always had frequent urination, but now that I’m not taking Metronidazole, I start to feel less and feel a bit more bloated. My doctor prescribed me Metronidazole for an early stage of my bladder infection, but I’m concerned about the possibility of infection from this infection. Should I use Flagyl for this?

Thanks a lot, Dr. Fonseca. I will definitely talk to my doctor about this before starting my Metronidazole course.

Sincerely,

Dr.

Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.

As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.

Flagyl is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. It contains the drug metronidazole, which is available in generic form. Flagyl is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
